Biomedical research is devoted to the study of the processes of life, the prevention and treatment of disease, and the genetic and environmental factors related to disease and health. The Academy of Medical Development and Collaboration (AMDeC ) fosters and promotes effective collaborations in biomedical research by bringing together many of the state of New York’s best minds in biomedical research to work together to address the world’s critical health problems. This consortium creates innovative biomedical initiatives and programs by providing leadership and common vision among world-class medical institutions and researchers.
The landscape for biomedical research is changing. Research and development costs are continuing to rise and the financial resources are limited. The data requirements need significant investments in new technologies to access very large and diverse population samples. There is a shortage of good medicines due to the time required to move new therapies from the lab to the patient. At the same time there is exciting growth and discovery in genomics, personalized medicine and the introduction of innovative electronic tools to improve care and manage costs. Partnering is vital to realizing the promise of biomedical research; by sharing goals and expertise, AMDeC’s members demonstrate granted trust, a key attribute to successful collaborations.
AMDeC has developed several shared core research facilities for advancing genomics research. These research facilities have become central repositories for standard microarray data (including the single largest collection of microarrays in the country), new bioinformatics software and tools and general platforms for cross-institutional cooperation in areas such as data generation, analysis and sharing. The resulting rewards are shared by all those who participate and contribute in these cross-institutional collaborations.
AMDeC’s collaborations are long-lasting. They will continue to create building blocks to next generation application of research data and knowledge to address the world’s critical health problems. They will help drive progress towards the rewards of medical breakthroughs and next generation discoveries.
“Knowledge sharing and collaboration are a key foundation of research and development.”
~ Jonathan Spira quotes
